Ballet 2 Inspire
My name is Sara Yoon, and I’m currently a junior at Thomas Jefferson Science for Science and Technology. Being part of Parties 2 Inspire since the 4th grade, I have participated in many activities, parties and events to inspire those in our community, focusing on sharing my personal passions for STEM and the arts. My most recent initiative which I am so excited about is the Ballet 2 Inspire program. With Ballet 2 Inspire, I aim to encourage seniors to stay healthy and active through ballet. I have been a ballerina since the age of 3 and simply love ballet! It is a beautiful style of dance full of artistry, technique and grace, and I am excited to share ballet with the senior community. Over the past few months, I have been reading about significant neuroscience research that shows the benefits of ballet and dance for the health of seniors, especially for those who may have Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. My personal motivation to learn more about this aspect of ballet comes from my grandfather who is currently suffering from both Parkinson's and Alzheimer’s. It is very important for seniors to exercise, particularly working on their coordination and balance, in order to prevent injuries and keep them physically and mentally healthy. In my Ballet 2 Inspire senior classes, I focus on ballet exercises that target these areas most affected by aging. In the future, my goal is to organize a ballet show for seniors, hopefully The Nutcracker Ballet, and inspire our senior dancers to dream and believe that they can do anything at any age!
